This is the third of my Edinburgh Fringe previews.
After the Act is a musical about Section 28 and the impact that it had on the lives of the generation who grew up under it.
The Local Government Act 1988, Section 28 banned the 'promotion of homosexuality' by local authorities. It caused many groups to disband and stood as just another barrier towards equality. But it also became a catalyst that brought together many groups and organisations working towards gay rights. It was eventually scrapped in 2000 in Scotland and 2003 in England & Wales.
After the Act tells the story through interviews and recreates memorable and now iconic scenes. Such as the protestors disrupting the BBC 6 o Clock News on the eve of the Act coming into place.
The staging has screens and projections. Blending the live performers with archive footage. It is a visually and sonically spectacular show. The soundtrack conjures up memories of the high octane dance music of those times.
Written by Ellice StevensĀ & Billy Barrett After the Act features Tika Mu'tamir, EM Williams , Zachary Willis and has music written by and performed by Frew andĀ Ellie Showering.
After the Act runs from the 3rd to the 27th of August at the Traverse Theatre.
